Splitting Pumpkins......42 viewsHere in a picture of a pumpkin that has split. Growing to fast will cause this..... as this pumpkin is done for the season. This condition can occur especially when young if the fruit receives too much water/fertilizer. Some genetic pumpkins are prone to wanting to grow too fast.

Hey.... save some pollen for me32 viewsBees busy at work moving pollen from the male pictured here to lucky females to start the baby pumpkin off. To control genetics the grower would want to prevent the bees from pollinating and move the pollen from a select male to the female of their choice. Deemed hand pollination to control genetics to pass to next years pumpkin
DSC02058.JPG
Controlled Pollination32 viewsA cup is placed over the flower a day prior to opening with cheesecloth stuffed in the bottom so no insect can enter and contaminate the pollination. Pollen from a "Chosen" male will be moved early in the AM @ or around sunrise, and the female recovered for a couple of days. The cup not only keeps the insects out, but keeps the rain off and offers shade during this critical stage.

The petals have been removed37 viewsPetals are removed to allow better access to the female for pollination. Normally 3-5 males are used, all from the same plant to provide enough pollen for lots of seeds and a "controlled" pollination. This ensures solid genetics for future generations of Giant pumpkins.
